In Tampere, Vernova's teams contribute to the development and delivery of Flexible AC Transmission Systems (FACTS) and STATCOM solutions, which play an important role in improving power system stability, voltage control, and grid performance. This role is positioned in an international working environment, with close collaboration across teams and stakeholders in Stafford, UK; USA; India; Germany; and Finland.
Lead New Product Introduction (NPI) Engineer
The Lead New Product Introduction (NPI) Engineer is focusing on valve technology in our global FACTS (NPI) team.
GE Vernova Grid Solutions Oy delivers mainly high power (>100MVAr) Flexible AC Transmission Systems (FACTS), Static Synchronous Compensators (STATCOM), Static Var Compensators (SVC), Fixed Series Capacitors (FSC) and Synchronous Condensers (SC). These are used to control power system voltage and reactive power flow as well as to improve the power system stability and transmission system efficiency. FACTS devices are also typically used to enable the integration of renewables to the power system making the future power system more sustainable. Energy transformation towards generation of electricity from renewables have significantly increased the markets for FACTS devices and R&D needs for the power system stability products.
The Product Delivery Group (PDG) for power electronics-based products STATCOM and SVC is in Tampere, Finland, while the PDG for FSC and SC is in Saratoga Springs, United States.
In this position, you will focus on technology around STATCOM Voltage Sourced Converter (VSC) and you will be functionally reporting to NPI program leaders in Finland.
Key tasks:
Your main task is to act as a senior semiconductor valve technology engineer and ensure high quality of products in close co-operation with research and development team, system design team, tendering team and with other stakeholders also. You are mainly working with STATCOM Voltage Sourced Converted (VSC) valve technology.
You are expected to have capability to work as technical leader. On top, it is expected that you have capability to specify, challenge, validate and approve the proposed solutions.
In this very versatile role, you have a possibility to become recognized expert in the field of power electronics semiconductor valve technology.
Role and tasks:
👉Technology road mapping, approval of designs and guidance for product development, tendering and system design teams and presentations to internal and external customers
👉Define design validation and testing strategies and execute and lead high voltage tests
👉Specify, plan and execute high voltages and Valve Submodule tests
👉Define and validate product protection strategies
👉Participate product cost out programs and support those activities
👉Follow international standards within your expertise area and patent landscape in co-operation with IP team
👉Participate technical discussions with key component suppliers
👉 Support sourcing team with alternative components/suppliers
👉 Provide technical guidance for after sales team
👉 Support integration of other systems, for example energy storage solutions
In this role, you will be focusing on the existing product development as well as future products and technologies. Therefore, you will have the possibility see larger technology trends in the field of electrical power engineering and power electronics. Required Qualifications:
👉MSc (or higher) degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent
👉5-10 yrs experience from the sector
👉Specialized knowledge in semiconductor valve technology
👉 Knowledge in compensation systems, power electronics (IGBT, SIC, GaN)
👉 Knowledge of power supplies, gate drivers, power electronics control HW, Valve measurements considered as benefit
👉 Ability to work in international environment
👉 Strong prioritizing and time management skills
👉 Fluent English (written and oral skills)
👉 Understanding of FACTS devices is seen as benefit
👉Experience in project and test management is seen as benefit
👉Experience in Matlab/Simulink, HIL, RTDS, SW, CPU, FPGAs and control electronics is seen as a benefit
Possible background:
You may have a degree in power supply, or have worked earlier as a senior design engineer or HW architect in the field. Power electronics products and systems as well as grid solution and power transmission technologies are familiar to you. FACTS and STATCOM are your areas. You may be a researcher or a doctor with hands-on experience.
